Money for Photographers and Emerging Writers

Okay, I've been storing a few things up. I have a lot up my sleeve...more to come soon but for now, these two are for you photographers and emerging writers out there:

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund independently administers the grant program that provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. For 2011, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October. DEADLINE MAY 31st!

(WRITERS) The Elizabeth George Foundation makes artistic grants to unpublished fiction writers, to poets, to emerging playwrights and to organizations benefiting disadvantaged youth. These grants cover expenses in a number of areas.

We offer financial support to unpublished and emerging writers for a period not to exceed a year; we offer scholarships for students to attend accredited MFA programs in creative writing; we support writing research; we offer funding to allow unpublished and emerging writers to attend writers’ retreats and conferences. The Foundation also makes grants to organizations offering services to disadvantaged youth in the areas of health, education, and creative writing. While the Foundation makes grants to support emerging playwrights, the Foundation does not make grants to theatrical groups seeking support for a production.

To be considered for a grant, applicants must send a package of materials to the Foundation by July 1. It must contain the following:

- A letter that fully describes the project the applicant wishes to be funded
- A recent CV that also includes the names, titles, addresses and phone numbers of at least five professional references
- A complete first chapter of the applicant’s book or a completed short story OR a selection of the applicant’s poetry or published chapbook OR a one-act play the applicant has written
- $25 application fee

Heading into its third year, this expanding program serves three constituencies: (1) composers get consistent, long-term, private creative space; (2) host cultural facilities fill underused space and also present the composer in a public program; (3) the community is invited to at least one free program – a master class, an opera-in-progress, etc. This year, we will be expanding the program to accommodate 8 NYC-based composers in 4 sites (Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens). (DANCERS/ PERFORMING ARTS/FILM) Dance MOViES Commission Program—The Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY is now accepting proposals for the DANCE MOViES Commission program. Selected artists receive awards ranging up to $40,000, and can also apply to create their works in conjunction with the Artist-in-Residence program at EMPAC. Works commissioned may take advantage of EMPAC’s infrastructure and technology, such as computer-controlled rigging, flexible black-box studios, and post-production engineering for audio and video. Previously commissioned works range from a punk marching band creating mayhem in the streets of Chicago to a poetic film based on the autobiographical account of a US-based African choreographer returning to dance in Zimbabwe. (ARTISTS) Galeria Bielska BWA is happy to announce the first edition of Artist In Residence programme. Artists from around the world working in the field of visual arts, are kindly invited to send a proposal for a site-specific work, an intervention in the public space of the Bielsko-Biała city.

During three months artists will have the time and chance to research, develop and make an art project in the public space which will relate to the subject of Beyond the time and to the history of the city. Besides the opportunity of showing your work in a public space Galeria Bielska BWA will include the digital presentation of the works made during the residency in the exhibition 1^st of September. The Gallery provides two apartments, living room, fully furnished with kitchen and bathroom. Artist pays own travel expenses, materials and personal needs.

Artist Fellowships & Residencies in Hungary, Maryland, Italy and Beyond!

Yes, I’ve been running around different towns reading from my book, The Memory Palace, and also doing a lot of radio shows. Therefore, I have neglected thee. I thought I better post something soon or you might forget I exist. But before I tell you about some great new opportunities—for all you local peeps, I want you to know that I’ll be reading at the Pelham Library, 2 South Valley Road in Pelham, MA THIS Thursday, March 17th at 7 pm. This is probably my last local reading until the fall, except for reading in Boston in early April, just so you know. And for those of you living in the Chicago area, please come to my one and only Chicago reading on Thursday, March 24th at the Book Cellar at 4736 North Lincoln Ave at 7 pm. It would really be great to see some Mira’s List fans there!

(ALL) The Platte Cove Artist-in-Residence program—offers one-week residencies each summer in the Catskill Mountains open to all creative types "who have an affinity for the natural world." Artists live and work in the Platte Clove cabin on 208 acres of wilderness. The cabin has electricity, wood stove, telephone, but no running water. Residents must provide their own linens and food. $30 application fee, no fees charged or stipend offered for the residency. (PRINTMAKERS) A Call for Entry—Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2: Wheat Farm Press has established a quarterly print exchange, and curated publication of prints. The goal of this exchange is to promote the development of the finest artistic ideas and talents in contemporary printmaking. By participating in the Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2, you have the opportunity to present your fellow printmakers with your best possible artistic efforts, and in return receive ten prints that are indicative of a fellow printmaker’s dedication, care, thought process, and skill. (PRINTMAKERS) The Venice Printmaking Studio—is currently accepting applicants for Summer 2011. We encourage the exploration of traditional as well as experimental printmaking practices and ideas.

Located on the glass-blowing island of Murano, the Venice Printmaking Studio is tucked away from the more trafficked areas of the city and offers a 2000 sq. ft. workspace overlooking the lagoon. Summer 2011 is an ideal time to visit Venice as it coincides with the 54th Biennale di Venezia.

(WRITERS) The Writer’s Center, Emerging Writer Fellowships—Fellowships are given biannually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to give readings at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Fellows within a 250-mile radius of the center will receive a $250 honorarium, and all others will receive $500. Poets with up to three books and prose writers with up to two books published are eligible. smARTpower, will send fifteen U.S. artists abroad to work with local artists and young people around the world to create community-based art projects. (ALL) Byrdcliffe Art Colony Residencies—The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers month long Artist in Residence (AIR) opportunities for visual artists, composers, playwrights/screenwriters, and writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Longer residencies are available for ceramic artists. The AIR sessions generally occur during the months of June, July, August, and September. Our goal is to provide solitude in a community and uninterrupted time in which to concentrate on creative work alongside fellow artists. (SCULPTORS) Funded Residencies—SculptureSpace, Utica, New York: Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a $2000 stipend toward residency expenses. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and a rotating guest panelist. Artists are notified in March of the panel’s decision. Primary criteria are quality, originality, and potential for growth. Non-New York artists pay a nominal fee toward housing. (ARTISTS) Call for Master Artist-in-Residence—two positions available: The Appalachian Artisan Center located in Hindman, Kentucky seeks to fill the annual openings in their Master Artist-in-Residence Program for artists working in metals and wood. The one-year residencies begin 9/1/2011. Benefits include: a substantial stipend, housing, state-of-the-art studio space, and the opportunity to teach at the Kentucky School of Craft. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) HUB-BUB Residency: 11 month residency for emerging artists/writers. The HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina is an opportunity for three visual artists and one creative writer between the ages of 20 and 35 to focus on their art-making/writing while helping with our organization’s mission to build community through dynamic art and ideas. Each resident is provided their own large studio apartment along with a semi-monthly stipend ($600/month total). Studio apartments are located above HUB-BUB’s Showroom Gallery. In exchange, residents spend up to 20 hours a week working for HUB-BUB or The Hub City Writers Project and getting involved in community based art projects. Work for HUB-BUB includes bartending and setting up for live music, films, and other events in The Showroom Gallery , distributing marketing materials for upcoming HUB-BUB events, keeping a regular HUB-BUB blog, hanging art shows, helping with fundraisers and special events, assisting in gallery maintenance, and more.
