Women And Health

Women And Health
The health of women and girls is of particular concern because, in many societies, they are disadvantaged by discrimination rooted in sociocultural factors. For example, women and girls face increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.Women and men have many of the same health problems, but they can affect women differently. For example, women may have different symptoms of heart disease. Some diseases or conditions are more common in women, such as osteoarthritis, obesity and depression. And some conditions, such as menopause and pregnancy, are unique to women.Women & Health publishes original papers and critical reviews containing highly useful information for researchers, policy planners, and all providers of health care for women. These papers cover findings from studies concerning health and illness and physical and psychological well-being of women, as well as the environmental, lifestyle and sociocultural factors that are associated with health and disease, which have implications for prevention, early detection and treatment, limitation of disability and rehabilitation.  The Women and Health Initiative’s research, education, communications, and other programs are rooted in the belief that healthier women mean stronger societies and investments in the health and empowerment of women are investments in social and economic development.

This is a time of great needs in the women’s health arena, but also of unprecedented opportunity. More than ever before, the global development community has recognized the improvement of women’s health and the achievement of gender equality as critical priorities.
