(ARTISTS) SIXTH ANNUAL WOODA ARTS AWARD

The Sixth Annual Wooda Arts Award is open to solo or collaborative artists working in any medium who have a strong commitment to experimentation.

The Award is for a residency of six weeks in an architect-designed studio space with cottage accommodation on an organic farm two miles from the coast of North Cornwall, together with a bursary of £1,800 and a small allowance for UK travel and materials.

Residency dates: 4th February - 18th March 2012 (possible to start one week earlier or later)
Application deadline: 14th October 2011!
Shortlisted applicants to be interviewed at Wooda Farm on 27th/28th October 2011

New Artist Residency in India for Visual Artists, Performing Artists and Art Critics

Hi everyone...this new residency in India just contacted me—I have no idea what they are like but they seem worth checking out.



(ARTISTS & PERFORMING ARTISTS) Call for Artist Sowing Seeds 2011—International Artist Village Residency in India—



Visual artists, performing artists, art critics and local community will collaborate to create work about environment and social development in rural Rajasthan (INDIA). There will be opportunities for collaborative work that interacts with the rural environment.



“Sowing Seeds” is a project that intends to create dialogues and exchanges amongst artists beyond their national identity and serves as an opportunity for rural artists to meet, share and exchange ideas, visions, and diverse views in order to create a deeper understanding of art. It acts as a social environment developing and improving the artistic impressions of experts as well as emerging artists. As an alternative art space in INDIA, “Sowing Seeds” is geared to exchange the challenges required to organize such a contemporary artist village residency within rural areas and thus giving rise to a new era in art.

The key to our Artist residency projects will be creating local community collaboration to create works related to environment and social development in the village Gelawas, Barmer, Rajasthan (INDIA). The artist residency will bring together 15 international artists practicing in a wide variety of media, collaboration, outdoor sculpture, documentation, or performing to bring benefit to a specific site and share ideas and methods for a period of 14 days in the village Gelawas, Barmer, Rajasthan (INDIA).


The artists residency will provide the selected artists with full lodging and food, work space, local transportation and a small material stipend.



Residency period—20th December 2011 to 2nd January 2012 [14-days]



Eligible applicants



* Young and emerging visual artists, performing artists and critics - Artists who are able to stay at village Gelawas for the designated period of time



* Artists who are able to produce results of his or her residence activities, e.g. exhibitions, performances, concerts or presentations



* Artists who are able to communicate and collaborate with local people and participate in the exchange program,

Grants for Artists & Writers with Children, Fellowships for Photographers, A New Residency with Stipend in Norway and More!

Greetings...first, a quick note to all of you who send me notices of opportunities from your organizations: I do not post about contests, opportunities to exhibit, etc. I really try to focus on finding people funding and residencies.

Below are a few things coming up—very soon and down the road. Also, I will be posting a new interview in a few days, this time with fantasy writer Robert V. S. Redick who has a new book coming out on April 19th called River of Shadows. (PHOTOGRAPHERS) Howard Fellowship—Stipends of $30,000 will be awarded to support photographers working on projects for the academic year 2011-2012. Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists and scholars with time to complete their work. They are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs. There are no residency requirements for individuals who receive awards. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2011. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 Awards— In recognition of the challenges of leading a creative life while raising children, the Sustainable Arts Foundation provides financial support to writers and artists with families. They offer a number of $6,000 awards in both the Spring and in Winter. The applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. They welcome applications from anywhere, but give some preference to residents of the San Francisco Bay area. In addition, they award a number of Promise Awards of smaller dollar figures to applicants whose work may not qualify for the main awards, but demonstrates both skill and potential. As with most grants, your portfolio aids the judges to rank you. They are also interested in hearing about your plans and how this award might assist you in attaining your goals. (WOMEN/PHOTOGRAPHERS) Magnum Foundation and Inge Morath Foundation - Inge Morath Award 2011—
The Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Foundation announce the tenth annual Inge Morath Award. The annual prize of $5,000 is awarded by the Magnum Foundation to a female documentary photographer under the age of 30, to support the completion of a long-term documentary project. One award winner and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers. Deadline: 30 April, 2011! (WOMEN ARTISTS) New Canadian Artist Residency At MAWA, Winnipeg, Manitoba—Two deadlines: April 29, 2011 (for residencies in 2011) and October 28, 2011 (for residencies in 2012) MAWA is offering their urban, loft-style apartment to women visual artists for residencies of 2-4 weeks in duration. Applicants can use this space and time for research, reflection, networking and/or production. They will provide free accommodation and a $300 honorarium.

(ALL/ENVIRONMENTAL ARTISTS) Chesapeake Bay residency—Annmarie’s residency program provides a serene place on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay for visual, musical, and literary artists to create works that address ecological issues and/or inspire community involvement. Residencies are meant to focus on merging the arts and the environment and should include the involvement of the local community to some capacity. Spring/Fall Residencies: residents are required to work with field trip groups and/or school outreach programs as scheduled. Summer Residency: summer residents are required to design a public art project that engages the visitors to Annmarie Garden in the art-making process. Summer residents are required to work alongside the public for at least 12 hours/week.
Studio Information—Resident artists have access to studio space within the living quarters (one bedroom), and are also welcome to use other gallery and classroom space as available. Annmarie has a modest ceramics studio with a kiln, slab roller, and potter’s wheels that are also available for use, as well as a painting studio with easels. With numerous indoor and outdoor exhibition and installation options, artists are encouraged think creatively about how and where to display their work. Artists should bring their own equipment. (ARTISTS) AiR Sandnes Residency in Stavanger, Norway—Sandnes City Council and Rogaland County Council, offer a residency to professional artists. The artist can be from abroad, a Norwegian national or a regional artist wanting an alternative project space. The offer consists of a 1-3 months residency in a rent-free studio with accommodation situated in the city of Sandnes in the municipality of Rogaland, close to the city of Stavanger.

The art studio is situated in the same building as several other artist studios at Stasjon K, right next to Kinokino – Centre for Art and Film. Housing is located at the city end of the largest park in Sandnes, Sandvedparken, about a five-minute walk from the city centre and studio space. In addition to a one-person bed the flat has a sofa that can turn into a two-person bed. On those premises we can accommodate for collaborators, a couple, or possibly a family of three.

The organization also provides funding—all artists receive 1,000 Euro per month. There is no specific application form. The application should contain a CV, a brief project proposal, documentation of earlier works and preferably some info about yourself as an artist and your artistic practice. Artist Fellowships & Residencies in Hungary, Maryland, Italy and Beyond!

Greetings, oh neglected ones!
Yes, I’ve been running around different towns reading from my book, The Memory Palace, and also doing a lot of radio shows. Therefore, I have neglected thee. I thought I better post something soon or you might forget I exist. But before I tell you about some great new opportunities—for all you local peeps, I want you to know that I’ll be reading at the Pelham Library, 2 South Valley Road in Pelham, MA THIS Thursday, March 17th at 7 pm. This is probably my last local reading until the fall, except for reading in Boston in early April, just so you know. And for those of you living in the Chicago area, please come to my one and only Chicago reading on Thursday, March 24th at the Book Cellar at 4736 North Lincoln Ave at 7 pm. It would really be great to see some Mira’s List fans there!
Okay, on to more important things:

(ALL) The Platte Cove Artist-in-Residence program—offers one-week residencies each summer in the Catskill Mountains open to all creative types "who have an affinity for the natural world." Artists live and work in the Platte Clove cabin on 208 acres of wilderness. The cabin has electricity, wood stove, telephone, but no running water. Residents must provide their own linens and food. $30 application fee, no fees charged or stipend offered for the residency. (PRINTMAKERS) A Call for Entry—Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2: Wheat Farm Press has established a quarterly print exchange, and curated publication of prints. The goal of this exchange is to promote the development of the finest artistic ideas and talents in contemporary printmaking. By participating in the Wheat Farm Press Print Exchange 1:2, you have the opportunity to present your fellow printmakers with your best possible artistic efforts, and in return receive ten prints that are indicative of a fellow printmaker’s dedication, care, thought process, and skill. We are looking for artists at any stage in their artistic lives to dedicate time to the development of an edition of eleven prints. We are looking for people who are passionately dedicated to printmaking, who don’t have access to a press, who have regular access, who print by hand, those who collage, make precise editions, make variable editions, those who can afford the time to work on prints every day, and those who sneak in time whenever possible to develop imagery. (PRINTMAKERS) The Venice Printmaking Studio—is currently accepting applicants for Summer 2011. We encourage the exploration of traditional as well as experimental printmaking practices and ideas.

Located on the glass-blowing island of Murano, the Venice Printmaking Studio is tucked away from the more trafficked areas of the city and offers a 2000 sq. ft. workspace overlooking the lagoon. Summer 2011 is an ideal time to visit Venice as it coincides with the 54th Biennale di Venezia.

(ALL) International Artists in Residencies, Budapest 2011—The Hungarian Multicultural Center, Inc.® (HMC), 501(c)(3), Dallas, TX/Budapest, Hungary based non-profit organization. The HMC dedicated to inspiring, connecting, exhibiting, and promoting artists. The HMC invites interested visual artists, writers, performers to submit application for its residency program in Budapest, Hungary. The residencies offer participants to interact with other artists representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Accepted applicants are expected to speak and understand English. (WRITERS) The Writer’s Center, Emerging Writer Fellowships—Fellowships are given biannually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to give readings at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Fellows within a 250-mile radius of the center will receive a $250 honorarium, and all others will receive $500. Poets with up to three books and prose writers with up to two books published are eligible. For fellowships in fall 2011, submit up to 10 pages of poetry or 16 pages of prose, a curriculum vitae, and a letter of interest by April 15. There is no entry fee. (SCULPTORS) Funded Residencies—SculptureSpace, Utica, New York: Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a $2000 stipend toward residency expenses. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and a rotating guest panelist. Artists are notified in March of the panel’s decision. Primary criteria are quality, originality, and potential for growth. Non-New York artists pay a nominal fee toward housing. (ARTISTS) Call for Master Artist-in-Residence—two positions available: The Appalachian Artisan Center located in Hindman, Kentucky seeks to fill the annual openings in their Master Artist-in-Residence Program for artists working in metals and wood. The one-year residencies begin 9/1/2011. Benefits include: a substantial stipend, housing, state-of-the-art studio space, and the opportunity to teach at the Kentucky School of Craft. (ARTISTS & WRITERS) HUB-BUB Residency: 11 month residency for emerging artists/writers. The HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina is an opportunity for three visual artists and one creative writer between the ages of 20 and 35 to focus on their art-making/writing while helping with our organization’s mission to build community through dynamic art and ideas. Each resident is provided their own large studio apartment along with a semi-monthly stipend ($600/month total). Studio apartments are located above HUB-BUB’s Showroom Gallery. In exchange, residents spend up to 20 hours a week working for HUB-BUB or The Hub City Writers Project and getting involved in community based art projects. Work for HUB-BUB includes bartending and setting up for live music, films, and other events in The Showroom Gallery , distributing marketing materials for upcoming HUB-BUB events, keeping a regular HUB-BUB blog, hanging art shows, helping with fundraisers and special events, assisting in gallery maintenance, and more. (ARTISTS) Indigenous African Workshops in Ghana: Cross Cultural Collaborative encourages interaction between creative people from different cultures. They are offering a workshop in Ghana July 11-24, 2011 that was inspired by women in northern Ghana who paint designs on their houses. This is an opportunity to work with traditional African potters.
