Fall Deadlines for Residencies and Grants!

Hey everyone....this is a big time for applications. Many residencies have September 15th deadlines. Some of you have recently written me asking about whether or not there are residencies in particular countries. Unfortunately, contrary to public opinion, my encyclopedic mind is not what it used to be. However, you are in luck—you can find the residency of your dreams by going to these websites and searching for the locations you are interested in: Res Artis, Trans Artists, and the Alliance of Artists Communities. And for now, check out some new opportunities below....





(ALL) Hambidge Creative Residency—The Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences is located in the Blue Ridge Moutains of North Georgia, USA. Deadline: September 15th for mid-February thru April. Eight-week residencies will only be scheduled in late fall, winter and early spring. This requirement may be waived under extenuating circumstances. Please note: due to high demand, the maximum length of residencies awarded for mid-May, through mid-August is four weeks. Applications for one week residencies are considered on a case-by-case basis. (ALL) ART 342 Residencies in Fort Collins, CO—ART342 offers 14-week and 6-week residencies to emerging and established artists, writers and composers. Studios, a kiln and basic equipment are available for most visual artists, including ceramicists. Quiet spaces exist for creative or scholarly writers. The composer’s studio is outfitted with a Steinway B, computers and software for writing and recording.



Awards for accepted applicants include 24-hour access to free studios, living space and a modest stipend. Residents are responsible for personal expenses and travel to and from the site. Situated in a semi-rural area, ART342 is just 6 miles north of Historic Old Town in Fort Collins. Up to 7 studios and 5 living spaces are maintained as private places for creative work. Pets, children, visitors and partners are strongly discouraged.

(ALL) BijlmAIR Artist-in-Residence Programme—Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost – center of visual arts), Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) and Stichting FLAT (FLAT foundation).

For 2011 BijlmAIR invites artists and other cultural producers to live and work temporarily in Amsterdam Southeast. This period can be used for project research or for realization of a project or work of art, following a relevant proposal made by the applicant. The selection committee of the participating organizations decides which proposals will be chosen.

The residency needs to relate to the transnational and intercultural society of Amsterdam Southeast. This can be done on all kinds of levels – urban, sociological, economical, historical, etc. The programme is primarily meant for young artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who finished their art education recently and are almost ready to enter the circuit of the larger art institutions.

Location

BijlmAIR has a studio in Amsterdam Southeast, on the first floor of an apartment building called Florijn. The ground floor apartments of this building are all artists studio’s. The artists who participate in Stichting FLAT are neighbours of our studio. The studio is suitable for one or two artists. Kitchen, toilet and presentation space are shared with the office of Stichting FLAT. Stichting FLAT frequently organizes events in the presentation space of the apartment.

DEADLINE: You can apply the until the 15^th of September for a residency in 2012.

APPLICATION: The application consists of a project plan (max. 1 page), completed with an indicative budget (costs and income) and a selection of relevant images to support your idea and which gives an insight in your work. The project plan concerns a living- and working period in Amsterdam Southeast.

MONEY

BijlmAIR provides a furnished and well-equipped living and working space. On top there is a modest working budget of € 10.000,- available for the whole year. The height of the budget per artist depends on the number of proposals which are granted. We expect the artist to do his/her own fundraising, if necessary.

(PHOTOGRAPHERS) LIGHT WORK RESIDENCY PROGRAM—Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP. Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in Syracuse for one month. They receive a $4,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility.

(WRITERS & TRANSLATORS) Ledig House International Writers' Residency—Ledig House International Writers' Residency is located approximately two and a half hours north of New York City in the town of Omi, in the scenic Hudson River Valley. Writers and translators from all fields are encouraged to apply for a residence lasting anywhere from one week to two months. Up to 20 writers per session - 10 at a given time - live and write on the stunning 300 acre grounds and sculpture park that overlook the Catskill Mountains. (ARTISTS) The Martha Boschen Porter Fund, Inc.—The Martha Boschen Porter Fund, Inc. provides grants to individuals in training, studying, or practicing in the arts, based on financial need. Giving confined to Northwest Connecticut and adjacent areas in Massachusetts and New York. This program does NOT support artists residing in New York City. (ALL) CREATIVE RESISTANCE FUND—The Creative Resistance Fund (CRF) provides $1,500 distress grants to people in danger due to their use of creativity to fight injustice. The fund may be used to evacuate a dangerous situation or to cover living costs while weighing long-term options for safety. Calling All: Visual artists, Writers and Composers and Musicians

(WOMEN WRITERS) Grants of $500 to $1,500 each are given twice yearly to feminist writers. Women poets and creative nonfiction writers who are citizens of the United States or Canada are eligible. Submit three copies of a manuscript of up to 25 pages, a project description, a budget, and a resumé with a $20 entry fee during the month of June. Send an SASE for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

(WRITERS) Margolis Award & Residency—A stipend of $5,000 and a month long residency at the Blue Mountain Center, an artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, is given annually to a writer of nonfiction (including creative nonfiction with the exception of memoir) whose work recalls that of Richard J. Margolis, a journalist, essayist, and poet who wrote about those whose voices are seldom heard. Submit three copies of at least two writing samples totaling no more than 30 pages and a project description by July 1. There is no entry fee. (ALL) Camac and Fondation Ténot Residencies in France—Call for visual artists, writers and composers/musicians. Since 1999, Camac Art Centre with Fondation Ténot has promoted creativity and international exchange in the artist community.

Camac and Fondation Ténot offers each year a residency bursary (fellowship) to one visual artist, one writer and one musician or composer in order to create new career prospects for artists.

Camac is located 60min away from Paris in the village of Marnay sur Seine within the scenic Region of Champagne-Ardenne. This multi-disciplinary creative centre offers a unique environment for visual artist, writers or musicians. Camac aims at fostering communication and creativity among individuals and groups working on the evolution of ideas or realization of works.

Nature of the bursary:
- 2 month residency (dates to be arranged by mutual agreement between the artist and the institution)
- Return ticket, board and lodging
- Private bedroom with bathroom, individual studio.
The laureate must provide his/her own visas and health insurance.

Thanks for your patience lately. I'm going to be pretty busy and/or wiped out until my book tour is over, at the end of April. I'll do the best I can posting things here and there on weeks when I have fewer events. Speaking of events, if any of you are in the Boston area, I will be reading from my new book, The Memory Palace, tomorrow night, January 18th, at 7 pm at Harvard Book Store at 1256 Mass. (ARTISTS) Keyholder Residency Program—Lower East Side Printshop, New York, offers free year-long studio residencies for emerging artists. smARTpower, will send fifteen U.S. artists abroad to work with local artists and young people around the world to create community-based art projects. Travel opportunities of up to 45 days will be awarded to selected artists to design and develop programs in cooperation with local arts organizations in host countries including China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Venezuela. smARTpower will support the development and implementation of community-based art projects that engage youth and other local residents, including artists. The projects are strongly encouraged to create a tangible legacy of the work accomplished through smARTpower in a variety of visual arts media, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, drawing, video, installation, photo-based work, public art, and interdisciplinary projects. Participatory work is strongly recommended and encouraged. Artists will address a full range of relevant subjects including, but not limited to, women's empowerment, the environment, health, education, and civic engagement.

Emerging to established artists are encouraged to apply. Finalists will be identified through open competition and selected by a national advisory panel of artists and art professionals. Each recipient will be provided with an honorarium, travel funding, a budget for materials, resources for documentation (including photography, video, and web posting), and on-site logistical support. (WRITERS) National Endowment for the Arts: Literature Fellowships—The NEA Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable the recipients to set
aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. The NEA Literature Fellowships program operates on a two-year cycle with fellowships in prose and poetry available in alternating years. For FY 2012, which is covered by these guidelines, fellowships in prose are available. Fellowships in poetry will be offered in FY 2013 and guidelines

Artist Residencies: Urgent Deadlines

(ALL) The Millay Colony for the Arts Residencies: The Millay Colony for the Arts offers one-month residencies to six visual artists, writers and composers each month between April and November. Nurturing the work of artists of all ages, from a range of cultures and communities, and in all stages of their artistic career, the Colony offers comfortable private rooms, private studio spaces, and ample time to work in a quiet, pastoral atmosphere.

Their facilities are located on the property where poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived at the height of her literary career. They have a seven-acre campus with meadows and forest in Austerlitz, New York, USA, adjacent to the former Millay home and gardens and the exquisite Harvey Mountain State Forest.

The Millay Colony provides food for breakfasts, lunches, and weekend dinners, and will happily respond to vegetarian or other dietary requirements. On Monday through Friday evening meals are prepared by an excellent local chef. There is no obligation, however, to be present with the group at the prepared evening meal. They have a share in a nearby bio-dynamic farm and so the bulk of their food is local and farm-fresh.

(ALL) 3331 Arts Chiyoda Residency in Japan: 3331 Arts Chiyoda has recently launched a new residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. This includes not only the visual arts but also practitioners in design, architecture,dance and music etc. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo.

The residency includes accommodation and studio space and also has a gallery, event space and coordinator available as an additional option. (ALL) New Pacific Studio Residencies: New Pacific Studio offers two residency sites, one in New Zealand, the other in Vallejo, near San Francisco, USA. (Note: Neither are free residencies although the cost per week looks reasonable and the locations are lovely):
New Pacific Studio Residency at Mount Bruce, New Zealand: In the lower North Island, New Zealand, is now open year-round to accept applications for resident fellowships from artists, writers and environmentalists in New Zealand and elsewhere. Fellows have many opportunities to interact with the local arts community: regular open days, exhibitions, radio talks, schools sessions, workshops etc.

Pacific Writers’ Cottage Residency, Vallejo: One of the oldest houses in Vallejo, this charming relocated 1850s cottage once on Rancho Suscol was first occupied by engraver Lucien Curtis and has been home to many Mare Island skilled craftsmen including a sail maker, a machinist, and a carriage builder.
