That executive who was once the face of the McKinsey brand - Rajat Gupta - has been indicted for conspiracy and securities fraud and sued by the SEC, reports BLOOMBERG LAW. However, we in communications have become so accustomed to these Wall Street legal scandals that we speed past the guilt or innocence to the possibility of restoring the brand. Can Brand Gupta have a comeback?
Those I have informally interviewed say that there is strong support from business people in India. They honor what this man, who didn't come from privilege, accomplished as an immigrant to the U.S. India would likely welcome him back to be mover and shaker in business.
The jury is still out among those not associated with India. Much depends on how the trial goes. Gupta is maintaining his innocence so a plea bargain is unlikely. Since the wiretaps at the trial of Galleon head Raj Rajaratnam disclosed Gupta's breathlessly recounting what is perceived as material information on the phone, U.S. business leaders have been distancing themselves. But that might not matter to Gupta. His value system might favor the opinion of those in his native land. An enigma, he is mostly unreadable as to what he does deem as important which doesn't relate to wealth.
